For our spooky special in December we watched the BBC Adaptation of MR James’ Lost Hearts (the most unsettling part was where they burned a hurdy-gurdy; they sell for thousands now) I read the world’s shortest ghost story – Death and the Gardener by Jean Cocteau – and gave a talk about culture-bound syndromes and Cargo Cults, Pete Fij told us about the madness that beset some of the contestants in the 1968 Golden Globe Round The World Race and Alexia Lazou explored the fantastical lives of ‘Three Ghouls’: Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. It was, in a nutshell, a horribly brilliant night!
We return in January with three fabulous talks from musician Charlie Beddoes, Prof Tamar Jeffers-McDonald and author Justin Hopper (Old, Weird Albion).
