Who hasn’t at some time in their life received a set of false teeth through the mail? I have. But then I did spend a year posting the strangest things I could think of, to various friends around the world. My inspiration was a Victorian prankster called Reginald Bray who, over his lifetime, sent 30,000 singular objects through the newly formed Royal Mail, including a cigarette, turnips, a bowler hat, his dog and himself. Bray also tested the wit of the humble postie by sending postcards with backward handwriting and cryptic clues for uncovering the recipient’s address. This talk celebrates Bray’s life and antics and how he inspired me to follow in his footsteps. It also tells the stories of a few individuals who have mailed themselves vast distances across the globe, which is not the easiest way to travel…
